Weather: March starts cool (5-15°C) and warms to pleasant by May (15-28°C). April is ideal — light jacket weather with clear skies. Crowds: Moderate in March, building through April and May. Weather: Hot and humid. Temperatures regularly hit 35°C (95°F) in July and August, with high humidity making it feel even hotter. There is almost no shade in the massive courtyards. Go at 8:30 AM and finish by noon.

Weather: September is still warm (18-28°C) and dry. October cools to 10-20°C — perfect walking weather. The famous Beijing autumn skies are deep blue with crisp air. Crowds: September is moderate. Avoid October 1-7 (Golden Week) at all costs — it is the single busiest week of the year with tickets selling out in seconds. After October 10, crowds drop dramatically. Photography: The best season. Golden hour light on the red walls with autumn foliage is unforgettable. Verdict: ★★★★★ (except Golden Week: ★☆☆☆☆)
❄️ Winter (November - February) — Quiet and Atmospheric
Weather: Cold. November is manageable (0-10°C). December-February drops below freezing, sometimes to -10°C. The courtyards are exposed and the wind can be biting. But — snow on the golden roofs is a rare and magical sight. Crowds: The quietest season, especially January and February (outside of Chinese New Year). You can often get wide-angle courtyard shots without a single person in them. Ticket tip: Off-peak pricing (40 CNY vs 60 CNY). Tickets are much easier to get. Verdict: ★★★★☆ for solitude seekers; ★★☆☆☆ if you dislike cold.

Best Day of the Week
Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday morning. Mondays are closed. Fridays see an uptick in visitors extending into the weekend. Saturday and Sunday are consistently the busiest days. A Tuesday morning in early November or late March is arguably the single best time to visit.
Best Time of Day
8:30 AM, right when the gates open. The first 60-90 minutes are the quietest and coolest part of the day. By 10:00 AM the main courtyards are filling up, and by noon the Hall of Supreme Harmony area is packed. If you can't make 8:30 AM, the last 90 minutes before closing (3:00-4:30 PM) are your second-best window — tour groups have left and the light is beautiful.
