Why Go Self-Guided?
A guided tour is fantastic for historical context, but a self-guided walk gives you complete freedom to linger at the spots that fascinate you and breeze past what doesn't. With a good route plan, an audio guide (40 CNY at the entrance), and this walkthrough, you will see everything the central axis has to offer in about 4-5 hours.
The Complete Walking Route
This route follows the south-to-north axis — the way the palace was designed to be experienced. You enter through the Meridian Gate and exit north at the Gate of Divine Might. Total distance: approximately 5-6 km on mostly flat stone surfaces.
Stop 1: Meridian Gate (Wu Men) ⏱ 15 min
Enter through the south gate. This massive structure is a palace in itself — five pavilions crown the top, and the five archways were each reserved for a specific rank. Only the emperor could use the central arch. Take a moment to admire the scale before passing through. Rent your audio guide here on the left side after the security check.
Stop 2: Gate of Supreme Harmony Courtyard ⏱ 10 min
The vast marble courtyard between the Meridian Gate and the Gate of Supreme Harmony. This is where you first grasp the sheer scale of the complex. The Golden Water River winds through five marble bridges — each bridge also had a designated rank. Look for the bronze lions flanking the gate.
Stop 3: Hall of Supreme Harmony ⏱ 20 min
The highlight. The largest hall in the complex and the ceremonial heart of the empire. You cannot enter the hall, but the viewing area lets you peer inside at the golden dragon throne. The marble terrace has 1,142 dragon-head water spouts — look for them around the edges. Best photo angle: the southeast corner of the courtyard, especially in the morning.
Stop 4: Hall of Central Harmony ⏱ 10 min
Directly behind Supreme Harmony. Smaller, quieter, and less crowded. This was the emperor's preparation room — he would rest here before ceremonies and rehearse speeches. The interior is more intimate than Supreme Harmony.
Stop 5: Hall of Preserving Harmony ⏱ 15 min
The last of the three great halls. Imperial banquets and the final stage of the civil service examinations were held here. Don't miss: the 250-ton marble ramp behind the hall, carved from a single stone and transported 70 km on an ice road during winter. It is the largest stone carving in the palace.
Stop 6: Palace of Heavenly Purity ⏱ 15 min
Cross into the inner court through the Gate of Heavenly Purity. This was the emperor's living quarters — a quieter, more personal section. Notice the shift in scale: the buildings are smaller, the courtyards more intimate. The bronze cranes and tortoises here symbolize longevity.
Stop 7: Hall of Union + Palace of Earthly Tranquility ⏱ 15 min
The empress's quarters and the imperial wedding chamber. Smaller halls but with fascinating details about daily life in the inner court. The Hall of Union housed the 25 imperial seals.
Stop 8: Imperial Garden ⏱ 20 min
The final stop before the north exit. A tranquil garden with 600-year-old cypress trees, rockeries, pavilions, and the iconic Hall of Imperial Peace. The twisted cypress tree near the north gate is a favorite photo subject. Good place to rest your feet before the final exit.
Stop 9: Gate of Divine Might (Shenwu Men) ⏱ 5 min
Exit through the north gate. The name "Gate of Divine Might" is carved in three languages (Chinese, Manchu, Mongolian). From here, cross the street directly to Jingshan Park for the panoramic view of everything you just walked through.
Optional Detours Worth Taking
Imperial jewelry, jade, and ceremonial objects in connected halls on the east side. Add 45 minutes.
18th-century mechanical clocks from Europe and China in the Hall for Ancestral Worship on the east side. Add 30 minutes.
Escape the central axis crowds. The red pillars and painted beams in the eastern corridors are beautiful and far less crowded. Add 20-30 minutes.
Walking Tour Tips
- Start at 8:30 AM. The first hour is the quietest and coolest. You will finish the central axis before the 10 AM crowds peak.
- Wear real walking shoes. The stone and marble surfaces are uneven in places. You will walk 5-6 km minimum.
- Bring water and snacks. Cafes inside are expensive and crowded. There are shaded benches in the Imperial Garden for a rest break.
- Rent the audio guide. At 40 CNY, it is excellent value and adds rich context at each stop.
- Exit north to Jingshan Park. The panoramic view from the hilltop is the perfect finale. Only 2 CNY, open until 9 PM in summer.
Total Time: 3.5-5 hours
Without detours: about 3.5 hours. With all optional stops: about 5 hours. Add the Treasure Gallery if you love artifacts, the Clock Exhibition if you love mechanics, or skip both if you are on a tighter schedule.
